Howick Prep School’s Deputy Principal, Mr Bonzo Miller, retired last Friday after dedicating 40 years to the teaching profession.
Bonzo started his teaching career in 1978 at Thornhill High School in Rhodesia where he taught before emigrating to South Africa. On arriving in South Africa Bonzo was offered a teaching post at Michaelhouse where he taught from 1980 – 1993. Whilst at Michaelhouse Bonzo taught Geography and was appointed as Housemaster of East House and Head of Department of Physical Education.
In 1994 Bonzo applied for a Grade 7 teaching post at Howick Preparatory School where he taught for the next 24 years before his retirement last week. During his time at Howick Prep Bonzo was appointed as Head of Department in 2001 and as Deputy Principal in 2009. Bonzo was passionate about his sport and coached many successful Howick Prep rugby and cricket teams and also served on the Midlands Primary Schools Rugby Committee for more than 20 years.
A lunch was held at Howick Prep School last week with 100 staff, past staff and family members in attendance where a certificate to recognise the 40 years of dedicated service that Bonzo so unselfishly gave to so many children over his teaching career was presented to him by Principal Grant Maartens. In attendance at the luncheon were Pat Bastow (ex Deputy Principal) , Margie Hamilton (ex Deputy Principal), Justin Miller (Bonzo’s son) and Brenda Hathorn (Bonzo’s sister)
