Umgeni Waterfall Bowling Club - 7 March 2018
(Where the fun never ends)
As a club, we would like to thank Kevin Rasmussen the owner of Cutting Edge Garden Services for his sponsorship of cutting the verges outside the bowling club. When we approached Kevin, he was more than willing to do whatever he could to help. The verges are supposed to be kept tidy by the municipality, so Kevin going beyond the call of duty is highly appreciated. Kevin’s willingness to help speaks volumes for his commitment to keeping local service delivery standards high.
Competitions
There were no sponsored competitions this past week, releasing members to play some competitive bowls at other clubs in the NIBA region. This, however, did not deter members from participating in all our tabs in games. Both Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon tabs in games were played in equatorial heat conditions. Saturday 3 March saw the start of our clubs 2018 Ladies and Men’s Singles competition. Bar a couple of people who were away, we managed to complete 12 of the scheduled 15 singles matches on the afternoon. There were some handsome wins but also a couple of very closely fought contests and one incredible “come from behind” win. Congrats to all who participated and well done to those who won through to the next round. Members are encouraged to continue playing the rest of the scheduled preliminary matches on Tuesday 6 March and Wednesday 7 March as both days are free of sponsored competitions. The necessary care needs to be taken to communicate playing intentions with the green keeper so that rinks can be allocated for competitions as well as tabs in matches.
Club Activities
Club coach John Withers and his team launched the Friday afternoon training and fun bowls this past Friday 2.30pm. Rinks were set out to facilitate a range of bowling activities. These activities challenged the participants to concentrate on the art of delivering the perfectly weighted jack as well as drawing to within a mat length of the jack among other activities. These sessions will certainly, stand our bowlers in good stead when we enter the next round of league games in April.
All members are encouraged to come and join us on a Friday afternoon, especially those planning to play in the next round of the league. Training runs from 2.30pm – 3.30pm and thereafter participants are encouraged to play 12 end games. We also had the privilege of having a visitor come and join us for one on one training with the coach. Members and visitors (even if you have never bowled before) are free to join us at these sessions. Sessions are free of charge.
