Ode to dance, a law school dropout and an ill-fated marriage.
KZN Philharmonic’s 2024 Summer Season
Concert Three - Playhouse Opera: Thursday 14 March at 7pm
The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2024 Summer Season, which features a splendid line-up of international and local talent, runs in The Playhouse Opera Theatre every Thursday from 29 February to 21 March 2024, with each World Symphony Series concert starting at 19h00.
Leon Bosch, South African born bassist-turned conductor - one this country’s most distinguished musical ‘exports’ – takes the podium for the third concert of the season on 14 March. He launches his programme with Grieg’s lyrical Holberg Suite of five movements based on eighteenth-century dance forms.
South Korean violinist Hyeyoon Park makes a triumphant return to perform Tchaikovsky’s crowd-pleasing Violin Concerto – the only one he wrote which he composed in Switzerland, where he was recovering from the fallout of his ill-fated marriage.
This will be followed by Frantz Schubert Symphony No 5, often described as his tribute to Mozart. This was composed by a 19 year old Schubert, as he was abandoning his law degree. This comparative rarity is sure to send the audience home in a euphoric mood.
