The pigeons have taken flight!
On Thursday evening The Duzi Pigeon Racing Club joined us to prepare their pigeons for the first race of the season. What an interesting evening! Each pigeon is brought to the club in a “basket” where lots of official activity takes place in order to register the birds for the race. Once this is all done, all the pigeons are basketed again, then sent off together to the start of the race where they will be released on Saturday morning. Last week featured two races; one starting in Vrede where the birds were released at 8.30 and were home by 11.20 and the second in Paul Roux which were released at 9.30 and home by 11.43. This means they were flying at an average of just over 100km/hour… how impressive is that! For any anyone interesting in seeing the pigeons, they’re welcome to join us on a Thursday evening; the birds start arriving between 6 and 6.30pm and we always have fires going for anyone who would like to bring and braai. After Thursday evening’s excitement, we hosted our monthly Dormehl Phalane 2 Bowl Trips competition. Any competition involving only 2 bowls can be a tricky one and you’ll often hear players commenting that they “really need a third bowl”! Friday morning was no exception, however the winning teams certainly didn’t them!
Well done to the following-
First Prize: Clarke Logan, Mark Taylor & Jordan Taylor
Second Prize: Bob Chetty, Bruce Tucker & Barry Fairbrother
Third Prize: Pippa Griffin, Cindy Bro & Sheridan Schraader
Plate Prize: Syd Fincham, Dutchie Le Roux & Garth Whitehead
A big thank you to Pippa and the team at Dormehl Phalane for their wonderful sponsorship!
Thank you also to Greendale Spar for their sponsorship of our monthly drawn pairs competition which took place on Saturday. Congratulations to Ed Speed & Pat Ciro for their win. These two have often played as a pairs team and are formidable opponents to play against with a number of wins under their belts! Well done to Barry Fairbrother & Jo Boonzaier who took second place.
Another activity that you can enjoy at UWBC is snooker and we’re on the lookout for our own Ronnie O’Sullivan! If you’d like to try your hand at the game, or participate in the Snooker Ladder, please contact Joe on 071 992 1150. The draw for a starting position on the ladder will take place on the 22nd of May so be sure to get your name in asap. Rules of the ladder are on the notice board in our snooker room.
On Wednesday’s, the uMngeni Darts Association join us to play both social and league games. Anyone wanting more information can contact Bundy on 079 625 3970.
That’s all for this week… see you on the greens!
