Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Outbreak in KZN – Important Notice for Riders & Visitors
The Department of Agriculture has confirmed ongoing cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in parts of KZN, including Mtubatuba, Vryheid, and Newcastle. While FMD does not affect humans, it spreads easily via mud, shoes, tyres, and clothing, posing a major risk to local farmers.
With the Gravel & Enduro events this weekend and regular visitors to Karkloof in the coming weeks, we ask everyone to please help prevent the spread:
Riders coming from affected areas (Mtubatuba, Vryheid, Newcastle) – please be extra cautious and ensure your bike, gear, and vehicle tyres are thoroughly cleaned before arriving.
Use our bike wash station after your ride to remove any mud or debris.
Clean your shoes & bike tyres before and after riding or running, especially if you’ve recently been on farms or affected areas.
Avoid farm livestock – don’t enter farmlands or touch cattle, sheep, or goats.
Wash gear & vehicle tyres if you've been in muddy areas before heading to another region.
Our bike wash station is available for all riders—please make use of it to help protect local farms!
Let’s work together to stop the spread and keep our trails open and safe!
