For those who are minded to linger a while...
“Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.”
Shakespeare’s Henry V is one of his best known history plays. The epic story explores England’s rising nationalism under the young King Henry V and the 1415 Agincourt campaign - a bloody conflict rooted in a questionable English claim to France. Through Prince Hal’s transformation from fun loving heir to respected, ruthless warrior king, the play examines leadership,
nationhood, and the moral ambiguities of war.
Although a history of England, told by the Bard, might seem a far reach for modern audiences, its themes feel strikingly relevant today, as the world once again confronts resurgent nationalism and unnecessary conflict.
“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.”
This production has been carefully cut and edited, with the Shakespearean language trimmed to better reach contemporary audiences. While it tells a heroic legend, it also confronts the brutal realities of conflict - and the inevitable violence that can accompany romanticised nationalism.
“Few die well that die in a battle.”
The play is staged by over forty of our Michaelhouse boys from E to A Block (Grade 8 to Grade 12), alongside two of our talented staff members Mrs Sally Cahill and Mr Dominic Gruitjers, a staff member’s child, and three St Anne’s girls and directed and edited by our very own Mr William le Cordeur. The running time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Performances will be staged outdoors in the Michaelhouse Amphitheatre, weather permitting.
We look forward to seeing you there!
