This bird found itself in some trouble with the recent rains. It was found lying on the ground soaking wet, unable to fly, and in a hypothermic condition at the Cascades Mall in Pietermaritzburg.
The following day the tiny bird was brought through to FreeMe Wildlife for an assessment. By the time the pygmy kingfisher arrived at the clinic, it had perked up and was looking much better! We will keep the bird for a short period to monitor that it is eating and flying proficiently before it can be returned to where it came from.
A big thank you to Andre' who rescued the bird and handed it over to FreeMe Wildlife. FreeMe is a fully permitted rehabilitation centre that deals with injured or sick indigenous wildlife. FreeMe wildlife is available 24/7 to offer advice on wildlife as a value-adding essential service to the communities of KwaZulu-Natal.
