Heritage House Preschool has been up and running since January 2016 and we have seen a growth of 500% since day one. The children spend a happy morning learning through play in a safe, secure and loving environment. Many outings of interest have been enjoyed, these help to extend the children’s knowledge and community awareness. Since our inception the children have brought cheer to the residents of several local Retirement Villages by presenting their delightful Sing-a-Longs, visited local farms, FreeMe and the Library to mention but a few. The children have also had great fun entering their artwork to the Royal Agricultural Show with pleasing results. A wonderfully exciting way of learning by Seeing .Thinking .Wondering.

RESULTS: The competition sponsored by J Leslie Smith Inc. on Tuesday morning 22 August was well attended. The winners of the competition based on overall shot aggregate was the trip of Peter Atwell-Brown, Mark Taylor and Malcolm Tait, with the runners up being the four of Tim Waring, Dave Riall, Anne Pyle and Ted Moore.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS: On Spring Day, 2 September, the Club will be holding a fun afternoon, with bowls until 16h00, followed by boerewors rolls from the braai. Casual wear “civvies” is appropriate, with prizes for the best decorated hat. All visitors welcome.

While holidaying in Mozambique during the July school holidays, Justin Campbell, a thirteen year old Grade 7 pupil from Howick Prep School and his sister were out swimming in the ocean when they noticed a woman, Moira Horne, had got into difficulty in the sea after falling off a canoe and hitting her head.

Justin and Samantha Campbell immediately noticed that the woman was struggling to stay afloat and was being washed out to sea. Staying calm, the two children paddled out on their boogie boards to go to the aid of the women in distress. On reaching her they lifted her onto one of their boogie boards and swam back into shore where they were met by her husband.

On reaching safety it was discovered that Moira Horne and her husband, who were also on holiday in Mozambique, are fellow residents of Howick!

On their return to Howick, Moira Horne contacted Howick Prep School to inform them that she had been washed out to sea and had it not been for Justin’s bravery she definitely would not still be alive and that both Justin and his sister Samantha had saved her life.

Justin paid tribute to both his parents, Rob and Lisa Campbell, whom he says have taught both himself and his sister to always remain calm and never panic if they ever found themselves in distress and that this advice assisted them when going to the aid of Moira Horne.

Justin was presented with a special certificate of bravery from Howick Prep School during a recent assembly.

My daughter's beloved  toys  were tragically left on the roof of our car in Merrivale on Saturday morning and were blown away when we drove away. We were travelling from Holiday Road towards Zeederberg Rd  and to Merrivale Heights.

We are desperate. It's kind of like a death in the family and are exploring all avenues for reunification.

The Spring Day – Fun Afternoon held on 02 September was well-supported. There were many interesting Spring hats to be seen, some decorated with spring flowers, some with hand-crafted butterflies and flowers, some with an Irish theme. The players all entered into the spirit o the day and had a lot of fun. The judges must have been hard-pressed to decide which hats deserved to win the best hat competition. At the end of the day everyone was a winner as there was a prize for every player. After the game many folk stayed to enjoy the boerewors rolls which were on offer. Our thanks is extended to everyone who helped to make this event a success. Special thanks goes to Pick n Pay Howick at DJ’s for donating the bread rolls.

The “self-defence” course on held on Monday night went extremely well. It was also well attended, and I am sure that all those that were there would agree, that Don Gold is a fantastic teacher and approached the training from a very practical and realistic angle. Don referred to the training as “Conflict Avoidance Resolution Management” (CARM) as opposed to “self-defence” because, if we are ALERT to our surroundings, we should be able to avoid direct and sudden contact with a criminal. But … if we do land up in a physical confrontation, the methods he demonstrated were simple, practical and easy to execute.

RESULTS: The competition sponsored by Halfway Toyota Howick was most interesting due to the poor turnout caused by the sudden onset of really chilly weather. Some folk played 2-4-2 while others played trips. The winners of the competition based on overall shot average were Jo Boonzaier and Mark Taylor, runners up were Barry Bedworth, Denise Rocher and Malcolm Tait.
Margie Wheelwright, representing Halfway Toyota, displayed the latest Toyota Yaris and also presented prizes. We are grateful to Halfway Toyota Howick for their continued generous sponsorship.

Umgeni Waterfall Bowling Club had two members enter the KZN Singles which took place from Saturday, 19 August to Monday, 21 August. It was most interesting to see how well the young folk play and how they seem to be attracted to clubs which have changed from the traditional ‘whites’ to multicoloured clothing of various styles. 

Colin Burden of Umgeni Waterfall who played in the KZN Singles got through to the final 16 players out of a field of over 100 but was knocked out on Sunday afternoon by D Schoeman of Richards Bay.

The past week has been one of great camaraderie and competition. The first event was the well–supported, well-organised all day tournament sponsored by J Leslie Smith Inc.
