In 1998 Rolfe Bettison saw the potential in a dilapidated building in Rosetta that was being used in the community trading store/post office and a scrap yard. With the help of his wife Susan, together they started working on creating the Ugly Duckling in Rosetta that opened its doors in September 1998.

 The Ugly Duckling is as family run business so you are bound to bump into or be served by a family member. This adds that personal touch so lacking in this day and age. The Ugly Duckling has grown from strength to strength over the past decade and tripled in size, opening branches in Rosetta, Balgowan, Clarens - Free State, Central Berg, and Hartbeespoort. 

Specializing in unique artifacts, jute and wool rugs, mirrors, beautiful imported wood furniture, magnificent cloths and throws, clothing, jewelry, antique-style telephones, clocks, gramophones, chimes, bamboo gongs, musical instruments and MUCH, MUCH MORE!!
