Mums & Dads...It's exam time and lots of studying, focus, frustration & general hard work going on in the household...Let us take off the pressure by providing some much needed nourishment during this crazy time.
Stock up your freezer with single portions of our home-style meals for your studying scholar. One less thing for you to worry about! You can rest assured that your hard-at-work kids are at least eating delicious, nourishing home-cooked meals...
Did you know...
A portion of Bolognaise sauce to pop onto spaghetti, is generally measured at 100g per person. The Cookhouse Bolognaise is weighed at 475g per tub and therefore goes easily for 4 people! Otherwise it's a fantastic 2 portion size with enough leftover for mince on toast in the morning...The Cookhouse Bolognaise 500ml (475g) tub = R72 (i.e. R18 per person for 4 portions). SUCH a useful one to have in the house!
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
The Cookhouse Family.
Midlands Meander Education Project are going Pink
“We are going Pink!” laughs Zinhle Msimang, one of the dozen women who are involved in the first phase of an exciting social enterprise project, facilitated by the Midlands Meander Education Project (MMEP) and sponsored by Boeing.
Jessica Gird, MMEP coordinator, provides some background “Having first-hand experience through our work in schools of the challenges young women face during their monthly menstruation, we decided to focus our efforts on making this part of their lives easier.
Through research and discussion, we realised that menstruation is steeped in silence, myth and misunderstanding. We observed that this is a national concern that requires open discourse.”
45 billion menstrual products are used and disposed of each year.
The cost for women who purchase them is huge, and the cost to the environment immeasurable. Pink produces and supplies a range of menstrual products (washable, biodegradable and re-useable) that are affordable and environmentally conscious, enabling easier access and creating meaningful part-time employment. In the process changing behaviour, encouraging independence and building confidence.
A sewing group, based in Howick, forms the core of the co-operative. These women make pretty fabric pads that are easy to wash, dry and reuse and are now able to better support their families while working independently from home. Sales agents (also part of the co-op) sell the fabric pads as well as South African made biodegradable pads and menstrual cups to cater for a diverse range of preferences and budgets.
Zandile Sikhakane from Impendle has been astonished at how easy it is to use the menstrual cup, reporting less pain than she usually experiences during her period. Wilderness guide Lihle Mbokasi, finds the more familiar biodegradable pads most comfortable, while the women in Wendy Mkwanase’s family are impressed by how much money the washable pads will save.
Entrepreneur and enabler Simphiwe Mntambo, who will lead the project into the future across South Africa, is equally excited. “Our vision is to create an empowered network of social enterprises where women can finally profit from creating and providing products, services and information that address their menstrual, reproductive and sexual health needs as appropriate at different stages of their lifetime."
We all know our rivers and oceans are in trouble. Polluted by plastic waste and other toxic effluent. A major cause of blockages in sewerage systems is discarded pads and tampons. Pink washable, reusable and biodegradable menstrual products offer you an effective way to contribute to the wellbeing of our planet – every month.

The day we have been waiting for is here! So excited to introduce our NEW LOGO! Inspired by the need to create a more authentic look and feel for our brand, we worked alongside our designer to produce a whole new visual identity for Cookin, something that is more in line with who we are and what we are passionate about. Howick Prep presents Charlie Brown's South African Safari
Charlie Brown’s cricket team never wins. Not ever. Charlie Brown’s summer camping experience never goes well.
Not ever. And now Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang are going on safari to South Africa. Everything that CAN go wrong, DOES go wrong – for Charlie Brown, as per usual.
When disaster strikes, it is up to Charlie Brown to save the day. Can he, at last, become the hero he has always longed to be?
Charles M Schulz created Charlie Brown, Snoopy and all the other characters over a period of many years.
The “Peanuts” comic strip started in 1950 and continued until 2000, although reruns have continued since then. Seventeen thousand, eight hundred and ninety-seven (17 897!) Peanuts’ comic strips were published in over 2 600 newspapers, with a readership of 355 million people, in 75 different countries and 21 different languages.
We have taken a bit of artistic license with our story. For example, our Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty lead cricket teams instead of baseball teams, and we have adults in our cast of characters.
There are no adults in the original Peanuts’ strips but we hope die-hard Peanuts fans will forgive us, and still enjoy our story.

A full week of bowling activities despite still working ourselves out of winter.
League Results & Fixtures
We had some mixed results this past weekend. We had an incredibly entertaining afternoons bowling on the Maritzburg West greens where our men’s 1st and 3rd teams narrowly lost. The 1st team lost 8 - 5 on points and 39 shots to 38. It was nail biting and all came down to the last end. The last league fixtures for 2017 will be on Saturday 28th October: Men’s 1st teams will be home to Mooi River & 3rd teams away to Hilton. Good luck to all our League bowlers
Results

Karkloof Canopy Tours celebrate their 14th Birthday
The ‘Canopy Tours’ originated in the rain forests of Costa Rica. A study of biology quickly developed into an adrenaline pumping, breath taking, eco-tourism activity.
Karkloof Canopy Tours celebrated their 14th Birthday last week and I had the pleasure of spending a fun filled day, experiencing their zip- lines.
I was happy to know that safety is of paramount importance. Each zipline system has been designed and built by Canopy Tour civil Engineers.
Each tour group of 8 is escorted by very experienced guides. A lead guide and safety guide that monitor your progress at all times.
Each tour lasts between 2 and 4 hours and as your fears melt away and your confidence at being up in the tree tops grows and after 10 ziplines you leave feeling a sense of achievement.
Remember to wear closed shoes and comfortable clothes, and know that anything that isn’t attached to you will land in the forest never to be seen again. Take lots of photos with your own camera or buy a cd of your Canopy Tour group that the guides have taken. What an exhilarating day spent in nature!
Whatever you do…make sure that Karkloof Canopy Tours is on your Bucket List.

Doc Maclean returns with the Cross Bones Blues Tour
Doc MacLean's second African tour, "Cross Bones Blues," finds him returning to many of the places he visited on his previous, "Zulu Skies" adventure. As if that Tour wasn't big enough, Cross Bones includes nearly 50 shows. From the gala Tour launch at the Canadian High Commission to the massive OppiKoppi Festival, to theatres, cafes, and wild little juke joints... This tour touches most parts of South Africa.
A number of Cross Bones shows will feature collaborations with South African blues and roots artists. MacLean, who was "thrilled" by the musicians he met last year, is working to create opportunities for these artists to tour North America. South Africa and Canada have much in common, and he believes that a broader exchange of artists would serve both well. In addition to fostering cultural, diplomatic and economic contacts, Doc continues to mentor a number of younger artists, and will present guitar workshops as his tour schedule permits.

Forty-five years ago Doc was playing Charlie Patton songs in Son House's living room. From back porch to big porch. The storyteller. An emotional remapping of contemporary delta blues. At one time Blues Revue Magazine called him the "Prince of Darkness." There's redemption here beyond the simple, acoustic medium– and an appeal that reaches well beyond the Crossroads.
It's a career built on hard travel and performance. Early roots in Mississippi. Chicago. Atlanta. Canada. Months and years spent living in cars, sleeping on floors, cheap hotels. Repeat appearances at some of America's best folk and blues venues. A lifetime spent on the Blues Highway with some of its most significant artists.
Long ago MacLean established his annual, 100 plus show, National Steel Blues Tour to play all parts of North America. In the process, the Tour itself became legendary. Ice roads to the arctic. Crazy, burning highways through the desert wilds. Hard travel, wrecks, and tough North American weather. And now the Tour is reaching Africa. "No venue too large, too small, too grand or too humble." Even places lost in the folds of the map. The thing that has been carried is returned.
He's a blues vagabond, writing from the dark side of the highway. A songster from the delta tradition, Doc explored and resided in the American rural south at a time when it was much less visited than it is today, and had mentors like Son House, Peg Leg Sam, and Sam Chatmon. Gifted by the grandchildren of slaves, MacLean now sings his own stories and tells his own songs in his own voice. His mostly resophonic, finger style slide guitar pays sonic homage to Patton, House, and Big Joe Williams, in a roots based, yet contemporary context.
Telling songs and singing stories. This blues came from the Mississippi delta. But before that, it came from Africa. Passed down from mouth to mouth. More than music. A placement of the human spirit. Doc's mentors were the grandchildren of slaves and he keeps their gifts close to the heart, and close to the Bone.
