Losing a baby at any stage of pregnancy, or during the early weeks and months of a new baby’s life is an unfathomably painful experience. There is nothing that anyone can say or do to ease the heartache of this, but meeting with other mums who have experienced similar journeys can provide a place where you can share your story, and your baby’s story, with people who understand this type of loss better than most.

Our perinatal loss group is run by a professional counselling psychologist, and it is open every week for any mums who would like to come. We will always run the group, even if it is just one or two who are able to attend. The group is structured so that you can attend once, or many times, for a few weeks or for several months.

There is no charge for the group, and it is run from our MommyHeart office at 9 Hillside Road, Hilton.

While most people were relaxing on the, 16 December, Day of Reconciliation, Hi- Q Howick owners and staff, with the help of Vinod Sookdeo and family were busy preparing to feed hungry children from the Howick area.

The Sookdeo family prepared biryani and High Q Howick set up a gazebo in the open space next to the library and served from there. The local councilor was asked to bring orphans and homeless children from the area and Hi-Q expected about 150 children, they managed to feed 200. Each child received a generous portion of biryani and as much juice as they wanted.

While waiting for the food to be served, the children played soccer, with balls also provided for the occasion.

This was such a successful day that Hi-Q Howick would like to repeat it in mid February 2017.

WESSA’s Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve launched their exciting new Junior Field Guides (JFG) course in early July with the aim to provide young conservation enthusiasts the opportunity to gain further wildlife and environmental conservation knowledge, following their Junior FGASA Bushveld Safari course. The group, aged between 8 and 12 years, enjoyed course-specific activities, themed crafts and fun mornings of swimming, hiking, and sharpening their bush survival skills – all whilst preparing them for the possibility of a future in guiding or conservation.

The Junior Field Guides will be kicking of their Junior FGASA River Safari course in January 2017. We hope to see you there.

Learners follow the FGASA (Field Guide Association of South Africa) junior membership programme, conducted by WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) A FGASA certificate will be awarded to Field Guides who have completed their work book and achieved a mark of 85 %.

Lance Hart of the Howick Prep U/11A cricket team scored 113 runs on Saturday morning, 28 January against Cowan House U/11A. Lance opened the batting and was finally dismissed off the second last ball of the innings. His innings of 113, which included 20 boundries, was a superb effort from a 10 year old boy as to score a century in cricket takes a lot of concentration and skill. Lance’s effort resulted in Howick Prep scoring 268/5 in their allotted overs and bowling Cowan House out for 28 to win by 240 runs.

In the League matches played on Saturday, the First Division Men’s side beat Howick 8.5 -9.5. The ladies’ League side had a good game and beat Maritzburg 9-4.
In the District Ladies’ and Men’s pairs competition held on Sunday, Colin Burden and Clark Logan did not fare as well as they had done in previous rounds but Rita Aitken and Tiny Lourens went on to play in the finals where they lost to Marinda Opperman and Rene Myklebust of Maritzburg West. Congratulations Ladies! You did your club proud.

District Ladies Pairs: Winners from Maritzburg West and Runners-up from Umgeni Waterfall.

The first two weeks have passed in the blink of an eye and the bowling year has got off to a good start with a sponsored competition at the club, the recommencement of league matches and the first NIBA competition of the year viz. the Ladies’ and Men’s Pairs.

RESULTS:
On Wednesday, 11 January the competition sponsored by Halfway Toyota Howick was won by Tony Gage, Piet van Rensburg and Pat Bennett. The runners up were Barry Bedworth, Jenny Mc Hendrie and Dave Riall.

Both the Men’s First League side and the Men’s Third League side had home games on Saturday, 14 January, each winning 9-4 against Maritzburg and Richmond respectively. The ladies played at Collegians and lost their game.

Two teams participated in the NIBA Pairs: These were Rita Aitken playing withTiny Lourens and Colin Burden with Clark Logan. Both teams won their sections and go on to participate in the play-offs at Maritzburg next Sunday.

Polliwiggle  Pre- School is a small school with only 10 children in a class. Our baby group (under 2 year olds) only has 8 children.
This allows us to give each child the individual attention they deserve.  We offer a nurturing, homely environment, we are a Christian based school. and do praise and worship with the children. We follow the caps curriculum in our themes, however we incorporate many Montessori activities in our 'teaching'. We offer the following activities at school which is included in the school fees: ball skills, swimming, music, arts&crafts,Library. We have a play area for the children to play in consisting of a jungle gym,swings and sandpit. An Art-room containing all our art materials. Adjacent to the school, we have a large garden where the children are able do ball-skills, and plant our own vegetables in our garden. Our property is 4000m2 allowing space for movement in a prepared environment. School photo's are done once a year.

We are a registered pre-school. The difference between a pre-school and a playgroup is that we do structured learning through play activities with the children. An example of this is that my 2 year olds are doing 24 piece puzzles and my 3 year olds are currently able to do 100 piece puzzles, they know their colours and are able to count and recognize numbers and letters. We do alot of hands on and creative art with the children, developing their concentration, fine motor skills ect.

We offer holiday care for our children for the April, July and October holidays. School opens in January on the 4th of January, allowing our children to orientate and settle in - as other schools only open a week later (there is no extra cost for this week). Our fees are for children turning 3 in 2017 is Full day R2085, half day R1665. For children turning 2 in 2017 its Full Day R1625, Half day R1330pm. These fees cover all outings and stationary for the year for the child. The only additional thing we request for parents to send to school are wet wipes & sunblock on a termly basis. Our hours are from 6:45am to 5:30pm (Full Day) - this is to cater for working parents who are not able to collect at 5pm sharp, as some schools do. Our half day hours are from 6:45am to 12:15pm. Our full day children have quiet time between 2pm - 3pm. We are open Monday to Friday. Closed on public holidays and school holidays.

We have a very reliable taxi Driver - Mr Zuma, who assists with transporting children for us. He drop offs and collects 4 of my children currently, as well as my own two younger children of 6years old and 10 years old.

We are a team of 4 ladies, all of which are qualified and experienced with childcare, as well as also have their first aid certificates. Between all four of us we have a combined experience of 50 years experience with children and teaching.  Next year we will be offering breakfast of mielie meal porridge and a cooked meal at lunch time - parents are asked to send a morning and an afternoon snack and juice- and food if the child is not on solids- parents would need to send appropriate foods an formula.

Once again, Howick High School achieved extremely pleasing matriculation results and we congratulate our class of 2016. The school achieved a 100% pass rate and 83.49% attained a bachelor’s pass. There were 110 subject distinctions. Our Dux of 2016, Gary King, attained 6 subject distinctions. Thomas Bull, Suleman Khan, Evan Nänni, Douglas Pike and Chloe Taylor each attained 5 subject distinctions.

At the Howick Prep Prize Giving held on Monday, 05 December Jade Harty, of Grade 7, was awarded the Jimmy Gorman Shield for All-Round Student of the Year. This was the second consecutive year that Jade was awarded the Jimmy Gorman Shield. Jade represented KZN in tennis and was selected for Inland Hockey. Jade also captained both the school tennis and athletics teams. Jade was also awarded the Smallie Cup for Mathematics, a special award for an over-all aggregate of 91%, a Speech and Drama certificate, the M.O. Norton Award for Good Fellowship towards Fellow Pupils and shared the Dux award for 2016 with fellow pupil, Catherine Viedge. Howick Prep is very proud of both Jade and Catherine who will both be moving on to St Anne’s when they start Grade 8 next year.
