Jan Airton, a local artist from Hilton will be exhibiting at this years Harcourts Hilton ART in the Country. This will be Jan’s third year exhibiting… her love of animals can be seen in her paintings.

The final tally was 267 blankets. We still have 200 plus squares to sew up!
Sean from the Round Table along with fellow members will be distributing the blankets when the first cold snap comes.

Another round of league games finished and not many left to go.
Our ladies team played on Saturday and Sunday and whilst they didn’t add many points to the log, all our players put in their absolute best efforts. The team captain, Lisa Nagel skipped against one of the district’s top bowlers on Sunday and had a great game with some absolute “cracker” shots. Well done Lisa and team and best of luck for your next and final round at the end of the week.
Our men’s team had a different experience in their game against Maritzburg Bowling Club, where they added a fantastic ten points to the log. Well done chaps! It’s so great for us to have a nice win under our belts this season and here’s to next week where we hope we see more of the same.
We’re all set to welcome Duzi Pigeon Racing Club to our activity list from next week and have also decided to change our social Hillbillie bowlers to a Thursday. Unfortunately, another local club decided our social bowls on a Wednesday was a winning recipe and so, you guessed it… they have started the exact same thing on the same day! In any event, we’ve made the decision to move our social bowlers to a Thursday, starting from 4.30pm, and followed by a bring and braai afterwards. Hillbilles is a great place for new and prospective bowlers to get a feel for the game, learn the basics and have a really good time. Anyone wanting to give it a try or join us can contact Wendy on 071 353 2866 for more information.

Well done to Gill Pryke of Glass Cuttings at Piggly Wiggly, pictured here with Robyn Day on the left (MUSHKA's driving force, who made 47 blankets from donated fleece) and Judi Joubert in the middle. This amazing lady is an artist and business owner who has a full day every day, and yet made time to fit in co-ordinating her long-held vision of a yarn bomb event for charity at Piggly Wiggly, which looks festive wrapped up in lovingly stitched blankets.
Thank you's are due to so many more also - there have been numerous supporters of this heartfelt drive. From those who donated wool, to Sew What for the wool discount and for being a collection/drop off point along with Village Talk, to the muscle power behind stringing up lines upon which the blankets are displayed, to Increda-Peg for their extraordinarily useful pegs, to Terri at the Piggly coffee shop who has shown bottomless enthusaism and given away litres of coffee for this blanket appeal, to every knitter and stitcher... and the precious folk at Pevensy Place and Sunfield Home who also brought blankets to donate. This has been the success of a whole team.
Hilton Round Table will collect the blankets at the end of the day tomorrow to ensure they reach the most needy communities. How polite of winter to join in by holding back on the chilly weather that is expected at this time of year!

Entries for the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa’s (IWMSA’s) biennial KZN Waste Management Awards are now open to all industries and businesses operating in KwaZulu-Natal, that generate waste and have implemented or are planning waste management initiatives aligned with best practices.
The primary objective of these awards, sponsored by Gidela Plastics, Interwaste, Averda, Triplo 4
and Hirt & Carter (HCG), is to engage organisations across the province in adopting efficient and effective waste management practices. By recognising and promoting best practices in waste management, the IWMSA aims to acknowledge the achievements of those contributing to responsible and effective waste management in KwaZulu-Natal.
These awards comprehensively evaluate waste management practices, requiring identification of all waste streams and adherence to the waste management hierarchy principle. Specifically, recognition is also given to organisations and companies that are actively working to improve society's environmental footprint, with a focus on internal waste stream management.
Heather Sheard, Technical Coordinator and IWMSA KZN Branch Manager said, "These awards play a crucial role in driving awareness and action towards sustainable waste management practices."
Who Can Enter
Businesses falling under the following categories in KwaZulu-Natal are eligible to enter:
• Small General Manufacturing: Industries with up to 250 employees
• Large General Manufacturing: Industries with more than 250 employees
• Service Industry: Any organisation offering services, such as retail centres, hospitality establishments, and educational institutions
Why Enter
Past entrants and winners have reported numerous benefits, including comprehensive waste audits, cost reductions, improved efficiency, and valuable recommendations from expert judges. Winners also receive press coverage to showcase their achievements.
Entry Requirements and Process
Entries can be submitted online at https://www.iwmsa.co.za/kzn-waste-awards-2024 until 31st July 2024. A judging team comprising waste management professionals will conduct on-site audits between August and October 2024. Audits will cover various aspects, including management, cleaner production initiatives, waste generation, and social responsibility.

In 2022, Defy Appliances eZakheni secured the top spot in the Large Manufacturing category, while USE-IT Waste Beneficiation emerged victorious in the Small Manufacturing category. T&T Bed and Breakfast clinched the Service Category award for their commitment to sustainable living and zero waste to landfill goals.

SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge
Women’s Upliftment Organisation announced as SPAR Race Charity

By entering this year’s Durban SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge each participant will be supporting the Sinethemba Women’s Foundation.
Based in Matabetule near Inanda Dam, the Sinethemba Women’s Foundation is led by Snenhlanhla Mbatha. With a passion for social development, Mbatha strongly believes that health is wealth. The Foundation is a dynamic NPO, committed to uplifting and enriching women.
With the mantra, “When you uplift a woman, you uplift a community she inhabits, as women are regularly agents for change!’ The Sinethemba Women’s Foundation’s projects and programmes work towards the development of self-sustainable communities and are centred around four areas: gender based violence; menstrual health; community outreach and skills development and training.
This aligns with SPAR strong national stance against Gender Based Violence, and the race’s theme of “Choose You”, a call to action to be kind and caring for oneself too, in all aspects of life.
“Our mission is to support women and the young people in our area to achieve their full potential,” enthuses Mbatha, who is a qualified Medical Scientist. “We encourage, enable and facilitate their active involvement in business, employment, learning and community life.”
The Sinethemba communities are served by a proactive team of women who volunteer their time in order to create sustainable and impactful programmes for other women. They also engage men and boys from the communities to lend their voices to the organisation, as “men and boys must be involved in conversations about gender equality, promoting positive masculinity and dismantling the patriarchal society they benefit from.”

Subhadra Naidoo, A Grade 12 pupil at Treverton College, recently entered two AIDT tap exams in Joanne Warren Dance Studio's March Exam session.
Subhadra did the Purple Badge Tap Medal Test - which is the highest test level in the Medal Test category - and achieved 80% - Honours.
She also did the Advanced Tap Syllabus Test - which is also the highest level in this category - and achieved 80% - Gold.
Excellent results! Well done Subhadra!

Simon Phiri, a Zimbabwean-born artist and illustrator residing in Bulawayo, specialises in pencil, charcoal and graphite drawings. His inspiration is beautifully captured in varying scenes of African tribal people, historical scenes, wildlife, and day-to-day life. Bob is a long-standing artist with a gallery in the Eastern Cape seaside town of Port Alfred. Schooled in the Old Master oil painting tradition of WG Wiles, Bob has since adopted the motto of “getting out of your comfort zone and painting anything and everything". His work is featured in collections in South Africa and internationally.
Bob McKenzie will join 61 premier artists exhibiting at Harcourts Hilton ART in the Country, open at Harrington House in Hilton.

If there’s smoke or fumes, stay low to avoid inhaling toxic gases.

- Feel the doorknob or higher on the door with the back of your hand. If it feels hot, fire may be on the other side. Keep the door shut.
- Stuff clothing, towels, or newspapers in the door’s cracks to keep smoke out.
- Even if the door is cool, open it slowly. Stand low and to one side in case smoke seeps around it.

- If the hallway is clear of smoke, walk calmly to the nearest fire exit and use the stairs (NEVER use elevators).
- Close doors behind you to confine the fire as much as possible.

Recently Treverton pupils went to the Cooper's gorge section of the Umzimkhulu River near Creighton in souther KZN to participate in an informal kayak cross event.
This discipline involves running a section of river of about 200m where certain obstacles in the form of pipes suspended above specific points on the river need to be negotiated.
As such, it is similar to slalom. This is a new discipline which will apparently make an appearance at the next Olympics.
After much time spent on the Thukela source-to-sea, these boys have developed into capable paddlers, and they did well here.
Jadon Davis ended up coming second in the juniors. That being said, there is much room for improvement, and we look forward to more of these opportunities. This event also represented an opportunity for Treverton paddlers to meet and mix with a diverse group of paddlers, the bulk being highly experienced.
After the competition, we had the opportunity to paddle the waterfall section. This involved a waterfall at the start of 2 or 3 meters, followed by a fantastic waterfall of 5m at the end. Two of our boys ran this drop, with Jadon Muller's execution bearing the marks of perfection. We look forward to the next one.
