KickstArt Theatre will be staging not one, but TWO South African premieres of Broadway musicals in the first six months of this year.
First up will be the South African première of Stephen Sondheim’s ground-breaking musical, Company. Never having been presented professionally in South Africa before, this witty, wise, and worldly musical about love and marriage in an urban environment, will grace the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre stage for two weeks only from 9 to 21 April. It will be directed by Steven Stead, designed by Greg King, with musical direction by Roland Perold, choreography by Simone Mann, and lighting by Tina le Roux.
If you loved this team’s productions of two other Sondheim masterpieces, Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods, you cannot miss out on this funny, classy, very accessible musical. Apart from the unforgettable hit song, Being Alive, the score features many memorable numbers, including the iconic Ladies Who Lunch, and Marry Me a Little, I’m Not Getting Married Today, Barcelona, Side by Side, You Could Drive a Person Crazy, and Another Hundred People.
The top-notch cast stars Bryan Hiles as the thirty-nine year old bachelor, Robert, who gets a great deal of relationship advice from his circle of married friends, which often conflicts with what he observes in their behaviour.
Multi-award winning actress, Charon Williams-Ros, who will be remembered as a brilliant Mrs Lovett in KickstArt’s Sweeney Todd, as well as Mama Morton in Chicago and Frau Schneider in Cabaret, is returning from the UK for this production, as the abrasive and cynical Joanne. And much-loved actress, Jessica Sole (star of Camelot, Shrek, Into the Woods, Chicago) similarly returns from London to play the neurotic and marriage-averse Amy.
Others in the strong cast include Lyle Buxton, Peter Court, Anthony Downing, Roland Perold, Lisa Bobbert, Liesl Coppen, Anne-Marie Clulow and Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri. Robert’s three love interests are played by the glamorous trio of Roshanda Lewis, Keryn Scott, and Leah Mari, who has recently been getting rave reviews and standing ovations as Maria in The Sound of Music in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Performances are scheduled 7pm Tuesday to Saturday, 2.30pm on Saturday, and 4pm Sunday from 9 to 21 April. Book at Webtickets.
Following this exciting production will be another musical of a very different kind. KickstArt Theatre is proud to present the South African première of The Emperor’s New Clothes, in a version of the famous Hans Christian Anderson fairytale by Broadway stalwarts Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. This team was responsible for the delightful musicals Once on this Island and Seussical, as well as Ragtime and Anastasia.
This colourful and highly entertaining musical will delight children and adults alike. It will run during the July holidays, from 15 June to 7 July, at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.
Directed by Steven Stead, with magical designs by Greg King, musical direction by Roland Perold and fresh new orchestrations by Jaco Griessel, The Emperor’s New Clothes stars Daniel Anderson as Emperor Marcus, with Roland Perold as The Swindler. Others in the cast are Marion Loudon, Lyle Buxton, Mthokozisi Zulu, Keryn Scott, Amahle Tembe and Roshanda Lewis.
Finally, what would a KickstArt year be without a pantomime at Christmas? Ending the year with a colourful, riotous bang is Steven Stead’s rollicking panto version of Puss in Boots! Set on an enchanted Caribbean island, the show features sumptuous sets, colourful costumes, song, dance and jokes a-plenty.
Puss in Boots stars Rory Booth in the title role, with William Young as his hapless owner, Tom, Blessing Xaba as Tom’s long-suffering mother, Merry Marzipan, and Lyle Buxton as his meathead of a brother, Tristram.
Others in this all-star cast include Bryan Hiles, Roshanda Lewis, Belinda Henwood and Kirsty Ndawo.
The production will be directed by Darren King, with designs by Greg King, choreography by Simone Mann and lighting by Tina le Roux.
It will run at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 5 December to 12 January. Performances are 2.30pm weekdays, 11am and 3.30pm Saturdays, and 2.30pm Sundays.
Early Bird Special Offers of 10% off all tickets if bought before the following dates: Company, book before 16 March, Emperor's New Clothes, book by 1 May, and Puss in Boots book by 1 August.

In the spring of 1999, in the beautiful and seemingly tranquil hills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, a young white farmer is shot dead on the dirt road running from his father’s farmhouse to his irrigation fields. The murder is the work of assassins rather than robbers.
Journalist Jonny Steinberg travels to the Midlands to investigate. It is clear that the young white man is not the only one who will die and that the story of his and other deaths will illuminate a great deal about the early days of post-apartheid South Africa.
Midlands is a triumph of literary investigative journalism.

Afrika Odyssey - update on the Kingsley Holgate Expedition
Legendary South Africa-based explorer Kingsley Holgate and his team are two-thirds of the way through their 41st humanitarian and geographic expedition which began in June 2023, and are now gearing up to reach some of the wildest and most isolated regions in central, north and west Africa.
Utilising new Defender 130s, the Afrika Odyssey expedition that began in June 2023, has already surpassed 40,000 kilometres along some of the most treacherous routes in Africa, withstanding torrential rains, excessive heat, and record floods in the past eight months.
This expedition is delving into the wild heart of 12 diverse African countries and has a strong conservation, culture, and community focus. The aim is to reach 22 unique wildlife reserves, managed by the conservation NGO African Parks in partnership with the government of each country.
“Over the past 30 years of adventuring in every country on the continent, we’ve come to realise that Africa’s iconic biodiversity and wildlife is under immense threat,” said Kingsley. “For a long time, we’ve been asking the question: is there hope for Africa’s wild spaces as well as the people who depend on it, in the face of burgeoning global demand for natural resources?”
“That’s what spawned the idea for this expedition and there’s good news. We’ve been privileged to see first-hand the incredible work being done to protect and restore vast tracts of wilderness and the frontline fight against criminal networks that profit from illegal trade in wildlife, logging, and mining. We’ve heard gut-wrenching, personal stories of loss from rangers on the front line, alongside uplifting stories of hope that bear witness to the revival happening in many countries thanks to proactive governments, and the positive impact it is having on both wildlife and neighbouring communities.”
The expedition has now reached 15 of the 22 wildlife regions on their list. Starting in the northern tip of the Namib desert at Iona National Park in south-western Angola, it has journeyed through nine national parks in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi; reached the furthest and highest source of the White Nile in the mountainous rainforests of Nyungwe in Rwanda; tackled a difficult route to two remote wildlife parks in South Sudan; and nearly lost the expedition Defenders to the worst floods in 20 years at Garamba national park in the remote north-eastern corner of the DRC.
The Afrika Odyssey expedition is also providing humanitarian support to communities living alongside these wildlife regions. “Unusually high rainfall in the East and Central African regions have escalated malaria cases, especially in young children and babies,” said expedition leader Ross Holgate. “The whole team also contracted malaria whilst in East Africa and we know from personal experience how deadly malaria can be. So, we’ve distributed over 7,600 long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets to date on this journey. With one mosquito net protecting on average a mum and two children, that’s nearly 23,000 people safe from malaria.”
“We’ve also provided 1,800 reading glasses to poor-sighted, mostly elderly people in these isolated areas. Additionally, conservation education forms an integral part of this expedition. Through our Wildlife Art programme, we’ve helped educate thousands of children living alongside African Parks-managed protected areas about the values of caring for their environment. They are the future guardians of these wildlife gems and it’s important to pass on the baton of conservation, to ensure they continue to benefit from Africa’s wildlife resources in the coming years.”
“Ahead lies the most difficult part of the expedition, to reach seven wildlife regions in Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Chad and Benin,” continued Ross. “We’ll be tackling dense rainforest conditions, difficult river crossings, vast desert and rocky mountain terrain where water and fuel will be hard to come by, as well as potential security threats. The logistical issues for this chapter are extreme.”
Veteran expedition member ‘Shova Mike’ Nixon, one of only three people in the world to have completed all 19 Cape Epic mountain bike races, will attempt to cycle 600 kilometres on a specially-adapted Evo-bike through Chad’s Sahel and Sahara desert to reach the World Heritage Site of Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve near the Libyan border.
“Ennedi is said to be the most beautiful part of the Sahara but I’m expecting a hard, physical test with powdery soft sand and temperatures above 40’C,” said Mike. “From what I’ve researched, this route hasn’t been attempted before by bicycle; hopefully it becomes another ‘first’ that adds an extra level of adventure and excitement to the expedition.”
The Afrika Odyssey’s Scroll for Conservation – with hundreds of pages already filled with inspiring messages from community leaders and beneficiaries, park rangers, conservation partners and government envoys – will also complete the journey, as will the well-travelled Zulu calabash that is collecting symbolic water from all 22 African Parks-managed protected areas.
“We trust that the Zen of Travel will continue to ride with us,” concluded Kingsley. “We need to showcase the inspirational potential of Africa’s people and wild places – it is not all doom and gloom. We’re raring to go for chapter three of this incredible journey, continuing the humanitarian work, and meeting more passionate individuals who are dedicating their lives to this beautiful continent’s wild heart and rural communities.”

Why does your business need Endpoint Protection?
In today's world, where digital technology is everywhere, keeping our online information safe is more important than ever. For businesses, this means paying special attention to something called "endpoint protection". But what is an endpoint? Simply put, an endpoint is any device that connects to your business network - like computers, smartphones, or tablets.
Why is Endpoint Protection So Important?
Think of your business as a building with many doors and windows. Just like how you'd secure these doors and windows to prevent break-ins, securing your endpoints is crucial to protect your business from online threats.
“The way we work has changed a lot,” says Warren Bonheim from Zinia, a leading IT technology group and Managed Services Provider. “People can work from anywhere, using many different devices, which means our 'digital building' has more doors and windows than ever before.”
“The threat from hackers and cyber-attacks is real and evolving. Remember the big SolarWinds attack in 2020? It showed how even the biggest companies and government agencies can be hit.”
Attackers are getting smarter and their methods more complex. They're not just using automated viruses anymore; they're actively breaking into systems, often undetected, by mimicking normal user activities.
Shifting from Defence to Active Security Operations
Gone are the days when you could just set up a security system and forget about it. Now, IT security teams must actively hunt for threats and stop them before they cause damage.
“This means constantly watching for any suspicious activity and responding quickly,” Bonheim adds. “It's like having a security guard who doesn't just wait for an alarm to go off but is actively patrolling the building.”
The Future of IT Security
The key to future IT security is creating a system that learns and improves continuously. This means that every new threat detected helps the system get better at preventing similar ones in the future. It's a cycle of constant improvement, making your business safer over time.
Bonheim concludes, “Endpoint protection is not just some technical jargon; it's an essential part of keeping your business safe in a world that relies heavily on digital technology. As the cyber world gets more complex, ensuring your endpoints are secure isn't just a good idea - it's a necessity. Think of it as an essential part of your business's online security system, constantly evolving to protect against the ever-changing threats out there.”

MIDLANDS, SOUTH AFRICA — In an unprecedented achievement, Brahman Hills, home of glorious views, breath-taking gardens, an award-winning spa and charming 4- and 5-star accommodation, has been named the Overseas Region Winner in the esteemed Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Partner Garden of the Year Competition. This historic win marks a significant milestone not only for South Africa but for the entire African continent.
“Amid South Africa's recent global achievements, from major sporting wins to recent music accolades, we couldn't be prouder that Brahman Hills is making a meaningful contribution to South Africa's global recognition,” says Orrin Cottle, CEO of Brahman Hills.
The RHS, founded in 1804, is renowned for its iconic events like the Chelsea Flower Show and its esteemed RHS Gardens across the UK. Elevating South Africa's gardening profile, Brahman Hills became an RHS Partner Garden in January 2023. Subsequently, late last year, Brahman Hills was crowned the Overseas Regional
Winner in the RHS Partner Garden of the Year Competition— a truly historic moment in African horticulture.
Situated in the Blue Crane Nature Reserve, Brahman Hills' visionary gardens span five-and-a-half hectares, comprising 26 distinct garden rooms designed by landscape artist Tim Steyn. Even though Brahman Hills boasts some of South Africa's most spectacular gardens, Cottle is convinced that what truly enhances their beauty is the incredible story behind them.
He explains, "When COVID hit, the hospitality sector took a beating. People lost jobs and established businesses closed. We had no guests to care for, food to prepare or weddings to host. In an effort to preserve jobs, our people had their salaries reduced by 50%. In spite of this, they volunteered and worked as if they were on full pay, regardless of previous roles: chefs found themselves digging ditches, waitresses planted vegetables, General Managers laid rocks in and amongst a host of other activities. It was a remarkable scene to witness and our gardens are evidence of the incredible passion and determination of our people and an everlasting testament to what can be achieved by a diverse group of individuals working together. In just eight months, our hotel team turned Brahman Hills into a jaw-dropping botanical miracle.”
Legendary landscaper, Tim Steyn says that every aspect of the garden was meticulously planned, from the graded levels to the pathways, stone walls, pergolas, and water features. "Every individual plant was hand-picked, with every corner of the property intended for maximum visual interest, providing interludes for photography and opportunities to linger and stroll," he explains. "We even considered the 'ambience' down to the last detail, from the angle at which the sunlight throws shadow or illuminates the garden rooms."
Today, the gardens brim with lush foliage, water features, and blooming flowers, showcasing the remarkable journey from conception to creation.
“We have poured our hearts and souls into every aspect of The Brahman Hills Gardens, and witnessing its transformation from a mere concept to an internationally acclaimed masterpiece is mind-blowing. This award really is the ‘cherry on top’ and whilst it’s a tremendous honour, it is also a testament to the dedication and resilience of our team, who turned challenges into opportunities,” says Brahman Hills Executive Director, Onwaba Gonyora.
Gonyora adds that they not hitting the brakes just yet; the team is gearing up to reveal Phase 2 of the gardens, alongside their newly upgraded 5-star cottages, from 10th to 12th May 2024. “If you are longing to connect with nature and discover a destination so beautiful you will have to remind yourself to breathe, then you and your partner should join us for The Brahman Hills Experience. Bookings for this exclusive weekend open in mid-February,” Gonyora concludes.

These two lambs, a ram (ear tag in right ear), and a ewe (ear tag in left ear), are now ready for release. This species in commonly seen in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands areas. They need your help to survive the onslaught on dog poaching in these areas.

In honour of World Whale Day which took place on the 18th of February, we are excited to share that Sodurba Community Tourism Organisation (CTO) will be hosting tours to the public at the old Whaling Station on the Bluff, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Earlier this month, Sodurba CTO, in collaboration with KZN Tourism, invited the WILDTRUST and several tourists to a ‘Whaling History Tour’ led by Bluff native, David Asgeir-Nielsen, where through a presentation, he shared the history of whaling, which saw thousands of whales pass through this very factory (whaling station) until a ban was implemented in 1979 in South Africa.
For the first time in five years the old Whaling Station accepted guests onto its grounds where David gave a building-by-building tour accompanied by an explanation of what process of the whaling took place in the various structures.
The launching of tours at this historically significant site is pivotal in reaffirming the Bluff as a Whale World Heritage Site (WHS). These sites, declared by the World Cetacean Alliance, empower, and defend the right of local communities to care for and protect whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans). These Whale World Heritage Sites aim to celebrate cetaceans in local culture, arts and events; support local economic and environmental sustainability; and develop locally based science, research and education.
An additional knowledge building opportunity for those interested in learning more about whales, is available at the Port Natal Maritime Museum based in Durban Harbour - KwaZulu- Natal in the form of a “Whale Time” guided tour to spread awareness about whales, their history, the opportunities they present and the threats they face. The WILDTRUST’ Whale Time Project strives to promote sustainable and ethical whale tourism along the east coast of South Africa, bringing science, conservation, tourism, and community together around whales.
“The Whale Time project also provides students from Coastal KZN TVET College with the opportunity to complete in-service training for 18 months as tour guides with the hope that they then go on to secure jobs in the eco-tourism sector,” said Communications Director at the environmental non-profit organisation, WILDTRUST, Lauren van Nijkerk. “It is so rewarding being able to empower young people with such opportunities, although we are limited in our impact and reach at the moment - in stretching resources and financial support too thin on the Whale Time project. If there is anyone who can help keep our Whale Time project alive and well or support us in any way, please get in touch.”
The Old Whaling Station Tour is available for bookings via David Asgeir- Nielsen on 082 3367 433 and you can visit the Port Natal Maritime daily for the “Whale Time Tour” on Monday – Saturday at 08h30 – 16h00 and Sunday + Public Holidays from 11h00 – 16h00.
You can also look forward to the “Welcoming of the Whales Festival” which takes place on the Bluff, Durban KZN every year around June.

Planning our days has become a little more complicated! It’s no longer just about traffic, getting the kids to school on time. Meeting project deadlines and what’s for supper! Now we are constantly checking load shedding apps to make sure that we can get all this done when there is power, and still stay sane.
With no guarantee that Eskom will ever recover from years of infrastructure neglect and corruption, the people of South Africa have rightfully taken back their “power independence” by installing their own back-up and solar systems.
If you are considering a solar system, a word of caution, ensure that you use credible and qualified contractors with years of experience in solar installations.
The solar industry is expanding at a rapid rate and there are a lot of new brands being shipped into the country every month, as well as new installation companies opening up to “catch a quick buck”. Making a decision about what system is suitable for your household’s energy consumption can be overwhelming and expensive if done incorrectly.

It’s been a bit of a quiet week this past week!
Of course, there have still been some wonderful games of bowls played during tabs in and our hillbillies had a fantastic time of Wednesday evening. The Midlands Hillbillies are our social bowlers who play on a Wednesday afternoon starting between 4.30 and 5pm. For anyone who is eager to try the sport of lawn bowls, this is a great introduction; it’s a relaxed environment where you can learn the techniques, etiquette and rules without any pressure. The only expectation of a new or prospective bowler is that you have fun! And yes, we even have club bowls that prospective players are able to borrow for the afternoon too.
Another Wednesday evening activity at UWBC is a great game of darts! On that note, we have some exciting news… after 2 years as a social darts clubs, the UMngeni Darts Association has been registered with KZN Darts and Darts SA, with their home ground being UWBC. Now that they are a registered club, they’ll be able to start participating in league games which starts next month. This past Saturday saw players from within the association play in the first round of qualifiers to go through to the All Natal trials. The next rounds will be played at UWBC this week for both the men’s and ladies’ sides. For more information or to join our darts players for social darts please contact Amar on 082 970 4949.
In other news we’d like to welcome Claire Butlin of Butlin Hearing to the UWBC family. Claire has recently taken up the opportunity of advertising on one of our greens facing sign boards and how impressive does her branding look! Thank you Caire!
Anyone wanting to look at advertising opportunities at UWBC is welcome to contact Colin Hall on 082 920 6306.
